Give us a hug 🤗

Things have been slight taking off workwise... and being a freelancer when you work from behind your desk most of the time, you forget how annoying the '9-5' commute is, and the general discussions around the watercooler.

Today's topic in the office was the coronavirus. That coupled with an article about the pandemic that is bound to infect all of us, paranoia was high. I had to literally force my mind into a better state. What happens, will. I try not to give into all the fear-mongering, especially one that is pushed by a media.

More disturbing than that, is the totally casual disregard for human life. "Oh, it kinda needs to happen." Okay, Draconian overlord, calm down.

In any case, who needs a hug? Check out this unused frame from some storyboards I did yesterday. Quick start, quick-ish finish:

Don't you feel better? But seriously, make no contact with people in public places. Disease running rampant out here in Babylon.

Sum up,
But you can always give me hug. If it feels awkward you held on too long or I like you.

Had recently put this up on the Insta (am I that guy now? [nah, I'm still vanity, filter free, so there is that...]). So thought I might as well share on here. A side-by-side storyboard comparison with the Starling Bank ad I worked on.

Done via Ekstasy with VFX by Glassworks.

💀I'm in the Death Business... Death being Storyboards?... Here are some storyboards.

Currently working on a little project with my guy from Stateside; I'm racking my brain trying to remember how we first connected. I think I complimented a dubstep music video he directed. Wait, what ever happened to dubstep? Is that, like, truly dead? Were we trash for listening?

In any case, the little project is a motion comic one, and currently in the storyboard frame stages about to move on to the animatic and character design. Without giving too much away, thought I'd share a rough frame or two, some of which are not in the final cut:

What do you think it's about?

It's always fun to do looser boards like this, because the lines always look more vibrant to me when it's fully organic.

Sum up,
...And business is good. Well, okay. Okay-ish.

"Bloodshot" Vs. Everybody 🔴

As you have probably seen over the past few posts I've been working on an illustration that I digitally painted recently for a Talenthouse competition. I would not go as far as saying it's the best thing I have ever created, but it is something that saw a bit of a return to the old me. Like using a pencil and paper and ink. Which should not be as weird as it sounds, being an artist and all. But with work, most of what I do tends to be Wacom, on-screen. So a change of pace to more tactile things was a much-welcomed instance.

The illustration and art were done for a bit of a competition for the forthcoming Valiant Comics + Sony Pictures' Bloodshot movie starring Vin Diesel. I have to say I was never as familiar with Bloodshot as I was with XO, but getting into the super-soldier, he reminds me of a Captain America meets Deadpool meets the Terminator. So, it was definitely fun rendering this one.

I didn't want to go too familiar with the key art already out for the movie (because then what's the point). As such I ended up with the idea of Bloodshot charging towards certain violence and danger, taking shots left and right, having his face blown off, yet still keeping an expression that was less "owwie" and more, "Alright, you're all starting to pissing me off".

So this is how things looked inked at first:

Then took her to Photoshop and started playing around with colour and shading. I think it turned out okay in the end. But let me know what you guys think. Check it out:

Click-clack gang.

Plus, if you could all do me a super solid and head over to Talenthouse and hit it with alike. Like, I'd be super grateful and indebted to you for life. Like kidney-level indebted. A digital kidney for your digital heart, of course. But a kidney nonetheless. Vote here: https://www.talenthouse.com/item/2266115/40c230dd

Audemars Piguet "11:59" Storyboards ⌚

Made y'all a nice succinct little video with a side-by-side comparison of some storyboards I did for the Audemars Piguet for the "11:59" promo they did via Mr. White.

The promo features Gilles Peterson and Skinny Pelembe. Musicians should get a kick. You might have seen it on my socials if you follow that kinda thing.

And though the boards were pretty rough and basic, I think it is always good to see the end result. Storyboards, if nothing else, is about vision and structure.

Sum up,

Quitting is only retiring before your perception of success is fulfilled. Way too much stigma attached to quitting.

Assembly for Dummies ⛺

2020 has been a slow burner. Understandably, creative types oft get this at the beginning of the year. Everyone is just about now starting to perform at optimum efficiency, getting on top of lingering projects, chasing leads and answering emails.

So a few projects, mainly in the ad department. So thought I'd share a random unused frame. What ever could they be attempting to build? A source of clean energy? Skynet? An ergonomic enema machine? Are the instructions in German?

Check out the storyboard frame:

With a grimace like that...

Been steady sketching and having the pen bleed. Tactile is always king. Few things have been annoying me lately so it's always good put the energy into something cathartic.

This weeks been quite, but that doesn't mean the work stops. Whoa is me with all this debris.

Had that image inked. Check it:

I've also done a colour render and my Bloodshot Talenthouse entry is also live. Will share that and a speed art type of video I made too soon.

Sum up,
Until then superfriends,

2020. Enough.

January 2020. What a shitty start to the year. The coronavirus. Kobe. Brexit. Politics and the idiots sharing all the type of propaganda that would get a nod from Goebbels in his heyday. It's like, "okay, enough".

But alas, I'm here doing the freelance schtick, looking for work, waiting for work, then resurrecting and starting whole new projects.

Currently working on a piece that has me resurrecting the sakura pens. Technology is great but tactile is king. The feel of pen and paper should never be tossed to the side. Skills get really rusty when that happens. I've learned the hard way.

Currently WIP, but I'll share once done:

Sum up, Bloodshot to bloodclaat.
